My mother is in her late 70's and for years Mom has told me that she is just not part of the computer generation. That computers and the interent are not for her. Well about a week ago, my father and her husband of 58 years past, and now Mom wants to connect.
Although Dad had a computer, that's not the one she wants. According to Mom, his computer was uncomfortable and looked too old. So being a caring son, I've made the time to learn what she wants, and buy what she wants and seems to think she needs.
Here are the secrets in buying Mom a computer:
1. Location ... Location ... Location. Dad could work in the smallest and cramped locations, however for Mom, it has to be spacious, ergonomic, well lit, and most important comfortable. Forget those clumsy keyboard pullout drawers. For Mom, the keyboard, mouse and screen are all on the same level. She needed someplace to rest her arms to avoid shakes.
2. Computer. Go with something reliable. Moms have no patience for computers that don't work all the time. I went with HP desktop loaded with XP Pro. Hard to find them with XP, however few places still have them. Until Vista or Windows 7 can be proven, why chance it. HP is a good choice, bit more reliable than Dell, however my personal choice for best is Apple ... just a bit too pricey.
